The skills gap describes a mismatch between the skills needed by employers to fill vacancies in their organisations and the pool of available people with those skills available to recruit. Whereas demand outstrips supply for low to medium skilled jobs, many employers are finding it difficult to recruit for high skilled roles throughout the UK and Europe. The field of commercial real-estate surveying is not immune in any way from these general trends.

  • 6 million people in England are at risk of being without a job or in work they are overqualified for by 2030
  • 5.1 million low-skilled people are chasing 2 million low-skilled jobs.
  • 12.7 million people with intermediate skills are chasing 9.5 million jobs.
  • Yet, for high skills jobs, employers can’t find enough workers.
  • There are 17.4 million high-skilled jobs but only 14.8 million high-skilled workers.

What needs to be done?

It is important that the industry takes a proactive approach to promoting the surveying profession as an exciting career path at each key educational stage. Liaising with teachers, career advisory bodies, universities and job fairs is just part of the solution. Firms of all sizes should be opening their doors to potential new recruits by offering site visits, practical exercises, challenges, and competitions designed to inform potential surveyors about the opportunities available to them and to enthuse candidates to consider a career in commercial real-estate. That’s why, at Colliers, we take pride in encouraging graduates from all disciplines to delve into our world, and gain first-hand experience in a fast paced, global environment.
